Starting computer info for Geology and Geophysics

Computer Info for New People:

Please, contact System Administrator at 612-624-6541 or geology@umn.edu, Computer Lab, Rm. 206.

Before any computer is put onto the University Networks, it must be security hardened. This means applying security patches, tweaking software, and plenty of other things. So if you buy a new computer, let System Administrator know, and DO NOT plug it into the U. Network before she has had a chance to OK it. This applies to everyone: faculty, staff, students and visitors. Virus protection is also required for all computers connected to the U. network.

(username required, use your U. e-mail username and password, this is also called you X.500 account.)

Other useful computer resources:
The department does not run an e-mail server. We use the central University E-Mail.
Information on E-mail accounts and software:

Students: initiate your e-mail account.

Faculty/staff , call1-HELP, and choose the password option to activate your account.

download internet software (netscape, eudora, ftp software etc.)
Forward your e-mail
Suppress your directory information (like your home address) from the public database (check out http://search.umn.edu/ and look up yourself.)
How to configure E-mail or network connections. (You get your network numbers from System Administrator, though.)

Virus protection:
The department has a site license for McAfee and Norton (Symantec) virus products. See System Administrator for details.

Printing information:
You must get a printing account, and sign an Acceptable Use Policy. See System Administrator or visit:

We have special U. pricing for computers (Macs, Dell's, Gateway, others). If you are buying your own, you can put in a credit card, if it's a grant purchase, see the Accountants on how to do that.
