Ouiz 3 Grades

  • 175 students are registered for the course.
  • 160 students took the quiz.
Thus there are fifteen 0% grades which are not considered in the following statistics.
  • The average (mean) grade is: 81% with a standard deviation of 17.9%.
  • The median (50% of grades are higher and 50% are lower) is 85%.
  • The lowest grade is 35% and the highest grade is 115%.
  • The grade distribution (binned into 10%-intervals) can be viewed in the graph below.
(For example the point at an 95%-grade indicates that over 30 students
    received a grade between 90 und 99%.)

You are back in business! Overall you did very well on this quiz: 10 students received a grade of 110-115%, 20 students received a grade of 100-109%, more than 30 students received a grade of 90-99%, and more than 25 students received a grade of 80-89%. That means that out of the 160 student who took the quiz, more than 50% (actually 57%) received a grade of 80-115%.

So, as expected, after a not-so-great quiz 2, you pulled it together again and quiz 3 is very good, overall, just like quiz 1. So please keep studying at this level if you have gotten a good grade in quiz 3 and do NOT reduce your commitment to this course for quiz 4 and the final quiz!

For those with low grades:

There are low grades of course as well and I strongly encourage those with low grades in any of the quizzes so far to see me either during my office hour at Border Town Cafe (see info and map below) from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays or to make an appointment with me as soon as possible! Again, my email is saar@umn.edu. Just email me and I will be happy to set up a meeting time in my office (21 Pillsbury Hall) with you.

Here is what you can do to improve your grade:

1) The best thing you can do to improve your grade is to come to lecture and to take plenty of notes on the lecture outline sheets (which you can download from the class schedule web page and bring to class as a printout) of what I say in lecture, because that is what is important! If you miss a lecture, get the notes of what I said in that lecture from a fellow student!

2) Compare notes with fellow students regularly to make sure you have complete notes (not just fill in the blank but also taking notes of explanations I provide in lecture and marking certain concepts as important when I spend a lot of time on them or point them out as important).

3) When you compare notes with a fellow student, also check with him/her to make sure you both understand the concepts behind the slides. Ask yourself, do I understand what this slide (its words or graphs or figures or photos) is trying to tell me. Do not just memorize words. If you understand the slide move on to the next to check that both you and your fellow student understand it. If one of you has difficulties understanding a slide maybe the other one can explain it. If not, come and see me.

4) Before quizzes study both individually and, if necessary, in groups and explain to each other what each slide's message is. If you have problems, see me.

Office Hour:
3:30-4:30 p.m. on Fridays
