The thinly layered or bedded Platteville Formation is composed of carbonate rock layers that form the resistant bluffs all along the river valley. The carbonate rocks, mostly dolostone with a few limestone layers, are more chemically susceptible to weathering than the St. Peter Sandstone, but are physically stronger rocks.
