St. Anthony Falls formed in the same way as the Franklin Avenue Falls, only on a larger scale. The falls provided a ready source of hydraulic power and were the reason for Minneapolis' settlement and location. St. Anthony Falls is no longer a natural waterfall though, as the Army Corps of Engineers has installed a concrete apron to prevent the Falls from retreating any further to the north.
