The rounded rock outcrops in the foreground are part of the St. Peter Sandstone, which was originally deposited as beach and offshore sands along an ancient coast, over 450 million years ago. At the time, North America was far enough south that the Twin Cities straddled the equator, so this was a tropical beach. The bluffs in the background rocks of the Platteville Formation.
