Textbook: Guide to Rocks and Minberals, 1978, by various authors. Simon and Schuster, 607 pages.
Course Formalities: Earth Materials is a 3-credit course designed for students who wish a general exposure to minerals and other materials derived from the earth, and in a non-calculus format. This course may also be used to satisfy part of the requirements for designated minors in both Geology and Geophysics and Environmental Geosciences. There is a formal lab in the course that follows lectures after a lunch break on Tuesdays. Lab exercises focus on material covered that day in lecture and will take a very "hands-on" approach to the subject. By the end of the course, you should have a much better understanding of minerals and rocks, their geologic settings and the properties that make them useful to society.
Students are responsible for all of the material covered in
the two class meetings and one lab each week. This includes the required reading,
lab exercises and handouts. There will be 9 lecture-based quizzes spaced throughout
the semester. You will be allowed to drop any two of them. Your seven highest
quiz grades will count 70% of your course grade. There will be 2 lab exams;
you must take both of them. They count 30% of your final course grade. Note
that there is no final exam in this course. For those taking the course S-N,
an S will be considered equivalent to a C- grade or better.
