Professor Kerry R. Kelts,  Director of the Limnological Research Center (1990-1999), died Thursday morning (February 8, 2001) after a courageous eight year battle with Hodgkin's disease.  Kerry came to the LRC with a firm conviction that the lacustrine sediment cores were as valuable as the marine cores and should be studied and archived systematically with the same care.  The establishment of the Core Laboratory and the National Lacustrine Core Repository are testament to his tireless effort.  Over the past 11 years, Kerry brought vision and energy to the Limnological Research Center at the University of Minnesota and to the paleolimnology and paleoecology community on campus and elsewhere.

On Saturday, February 17, a memorial service will be held in the Memorial Hall of the McNamara Alumni Center, University of Minnesota Gateway Building, 200 Oak Street, SE, Minneapolis, MN 55440. The service will begin at 12:00 noon, followed by a reception.

At the request of his family, donations to the Kerry R. Kelts Memorial Fund are requested in lieu of flowers. The fund will be used to support the attendance of graduate students at professional meetings. Checks may be made out to the University of Minnesota and mailed to the Kerry R. Kelts Memorial Fund, c/o Kathy Pollock, University of Minnesota, Limnological Research Center,  310 Pillsbury Drive SE., Minneapolis, MN 55455 USA.
