Footers of web pages at the U. Mn

Below is some information about data which should be contained on
University of Minnesota webpages. Most if not all of this information
can be put discretely at the bottom of the page.

Further down is an example, and suitable HTML that you should be able
to cut and paste into your page, and then edit just a tad to match your page.

Not all of our webpages have to be updated to contain this information right away.
Please just add it the next time you're editing your pages. After a few semesters,
it should propogate to all active pages.

  1. Copyright notice. By default all original U. Mn Web page content is copyrighted to the U,
except under certain circumstances (copyright already owned by someone else,
in which case it must be credited) or unless you have the copyright.
See the Copyright section of http://www.ogc.umn.edu/questions/
(The Office of the General Counsel) for more info.
This should be at the bottom of ALL webpages.

  2. The " Equal Opportunity" statement.
This only needs to be at the bottom of main pages,
such as the main page for a course, research group or organization.

  3. Last Modified date. This can be in any format, it doiesn't have to be as long
as the example below. But this lets the reader know if they are looking at recent
    or out of date pages.
Useful to have somewhere on all pages.

  4. The URL of the document. This is useful for people who get a printed copy of the
page, they can find it again.
Useful to have at the bottom of all pages.

  5. A link to the U's Privacy Notice, found at: http://www.privacy.umn.edu
This only needs to be at the bottom of main pages,
such as the main page for a course, research group or organization.

  6. Access Count. Nice to have, not necessary. Totally up to you.

  7. I would also recommend visiting the U of Mn. Web Accessibility Standards at
    http://cap.umn.edu/AIT/Web/index.html
These pages talk about how to design pages so they are easy to use by those with disabilities.
Pay special attention to the ALT TAG discussion, fonts, backgrounds and multimedia.
A good summary is here: http://cap.umn.edu/ait/Web/Comparison.html

Here's an example of the code necessary to make the text, including all of the above.
In many cases you can cut and paste it, but cutting and pasting into either Netscape
Composer or MS word might cause some strangeness:
