The How-To Page
How to connect to campus, and the departmental machines,
from Off-Campus, and even from out of the country.
- VPN, or Virtual Private Networks, are used to log in to campus from
off-campus, while making it appear that you are on campus, so you can
use campus resources such as GeoRef, other library resources, or other
network resources that require a U. of MN login. It's kind of
like a modem pool for high-speed connections.
- SSH, or Secure SHell, is a way to encrypt everything you send across
the internet, regardless of where you're logging in from, and is used to
access the departmental machines from off-campus.
- Huh? What's the difference?
Read SSH and (vs.) VPN for an
explaination of that.
- How to use FTP over an SSH connection (Windows)
(This will allow you to FTP into the Unix machines and update your
webpages from off campus.)
