Microsoft Developers Network / Academic Alliance is a program which the Institute of Technology bought into which gives departments access to many of the developer tools for Microsoft products. • Freeware / Free: Software that is freely available.

• Shareware / Demo: Software that is downloadable from the internet, but the creators of the software would like them to be registered for use, and a small fee (generally $5-20) be paid.

• Lab Only: These are generally products for which we only have licenses enough for the lab, or that came with hardware. This software will not be 'leant' out to other people, your own licenses must be bought.

• U. site license, lab use only: The university has negotiated a number of deals with software vendors for better pricing on software. We as a department can buy into those site licenses in two ways: copy by copy, or as an 'unlimited' site license. Software that has the potentially to be widely used we have bought as 'unlimited' licenses, software which only a few people might use we have as copy by copy, for use in the lab only. Others in the department are welcome to also buy into these licenses, but let me know, so if there is a great demand, we can buy an unlimited license, and save money.

• Site License: Software that we have unlimited use of. This includes the virus protection.

• Microsoft Campus Agreement
  Includes: Microsoft Office (all versions, all operating systems) and All non-server versions of Windows (98,2000,XP are easily attainable).
  We now have a site license for this software through Microsoft Campus Agreement (best viewed with IE).
  The agreement states that this can be installed/used by Faculty, Staff, Researchers or on any machine bought from Departmental or Grant funds. So faculty who bought their own office machines can use it, and students who are working on machines bought with departmental funds can use it, but students who bought their own computers are not included. This is because the University decided not to buy the seperately available "Student Option".
  There is also a "Home" option, which means that any person who is eligible above can take home a copy to install on their home computers. However, a serialized copy of the software much be purchased for a minimal price (~$15), which has it's own serial number. This means that if the software is found being used illegally, the person who has that serial number is held responsible. Therefore, don't ask to borrow the CDs that I have for home use. Once the system is worked out, I'll post info on how it works.

• MSDN/AA Microsoft Developers Network Academic Alliance.
  This is a program which the Institute of Technology bought into which gives departments access to many of the developer tools for Microsoft products. Usage is restricted by the license, which can be read at: http://www.msdnaa.net/programusage.aspx It is for use for Instructional or non-commercial research purposes only.
  It is available to Facutly, staff, and researchers. Or to students who are either working on computers bought with Departmental or Grant money, or who are IT students. (I think. The licence on this is very confusing).

• The TEL Kit or the Faculty Toolkit, is a collection of free and reduced-price multimedia software available to University of Minnesota instructors to use for University course development and instructional purposes. It is available from the Digital Media Center The software which is available through the Faculty Toolkit is listed at http://dmc.umn.edu/services/toolkit.shtml#2 It is not for research use.

• Keyserver software from Sassafras Software allows a software license to be shared and regulated. More info coming soon as the Keyserver system is tuned.
