Details on getting network connections in Pillsbury Hall

Here at the University of Minnesota, Internet addresses, or IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, are assigned based on the ethernet jack, or network plug-in, in the wall. Therefore, when a computer is moved, it's IP address also has to change. The only exceptions to this are computers which use DHCP (more on that below), or the departmental laptops, which I have just assigned IP addresses to for simplicity.

If you are taking over a jack which is already active from a previous occupant, please see System Administrator for your Internet configuration numbers (IP address, etc), and see System Administrator or Kathy Ohler about changing the budget number which pays for the connection. More on that below.

In order to activate a jack which is already wired, please contact either Kathy Ohler or System Administrator. Activation and deactivation charges run roughly $25. And monthly charges also run about $20.

See these pages for specific and up-to-date charges:
(NTS stands for Networking and Telecommunications Services, they run the U's network and maintain the hardware)

Turn-around time for these orders is usually somewhere between 1 and 2 months, so plan ahead.

All network charges have to be charged to a budget or CUFS number. Contact your advisor or your administrator for more details.

If the location does not already have a network connection, one will have to be wired. This often takes a fair bit of time, and the cost of hiring the electricians is added onto the connection bill.

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It basically means a computer elsewhere assigns your IP address to your computer, instead of doing it manually. The U. is testing wide-spread use of this tool, but the Geology and Geophysics Department hasn't really gotten into this yet. Chances are we will soon because it simplifies maintaining all of the network numbers.

If you use your laptop in a number of places on campus, this is a crucial service to have.

See the NTS DHCP Services FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for more info.
