Qualifications: ESSENTIAL: Basic user knowledge of computers, esp. Macs and Windows (knowing how to word process would be enough).
PREFER sophisticated knowledge of applications such as Excel and some scientific analysis programs,
as well as software and hardware support experience. Non Computer Science students encouraged to apply,
students in the Earth Sciences especially encouraged to apply, even if you think you wouldn't be qualified. Training will be provided.
Duties: Depend on experience and preference. Would be part of computer systems support staff for Dept.
of Geology and Geophysics, helping to maintain the public computing lab as well as faculty and staff computers.
Users include faculty, staff, students. Duties could include (depending on experience):
Lab related:
- General install and maintenance of lab computers:
- Installing new software,
- Rebuilding the computers when they become unstable (from a previously created disk images).
- Maintain specialized software bought by others, such as Argus One, and GWB, and maintain any specialized licenses
which come with them.
- Maintain the hardware, such as fixing broken floppy drives, replacing broken monitors, when this involves
warranty returns or taking machines to Computer Repair.
- Cleaning the lab and the machines.
- Simple printer maintenance.
- Simple printer account maintenance, keeping an eye on supplies.
- Maintaining a reservation schedule for the lab.
- Helping to maintain the file server:
- Routine tasks such as backups, account deactivation and deletion, etc.
- Confirm automatic virus protection updates, install on machines where manual install is necessary.
- Provide basic software and hardware help to lab users.
Departmental (non-lab)
- Trouble-shoot networking problems on computers. This can be due to mis-configurations, a bad network card,
a bad network cable, etc.
- Assist in setting up new computers and installing software, and installing virus protection, and the software necessary to print.
- Provide basic computer training, how to print, how to use basic software.
- Maintain accounts for both printing and on the file server for backups.
- Provide basic information on how to put web pages up onto the web (where to place their files etc).
Unix based:
- Backup the data on the computers.
- Maintain accounts, and close those unneeded.
- Clean up disk space as needed.
