Job Title:        Laboratory Manager and Research Associate

 

Location:        University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota

                        Department of Geology and Geophysics

 

Job Duties:    Hardware and software support of existing high pressure facilities; design and installation of new multi-anvil device in LabŐs recently acquired Kennedy press. 

 

Requirements:           Ph.D. in Earth Science; 3 years post-doctoral experience; experience in installation and maintenance of multi-anvil apparatus; strong background in thermodynamics, mineral physics (including defect chemistry) and mantle petrology.  Computer skills should include experience in interfacing of computers with laboratory equipment for purposes of data acquisition and systems control.

 

Additional information:       The successful applicant will perform independent research in experimental petrology, with particular emphasis on experimental investigation of the role of fluids in mantle melting processes. Expertise in infrared spectroscopy is essential, and experience in other analytical techniques for characterization and measurement of volatile elements in geologic materials (e.g. Raman spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy) is desirable. The applicant will be required to maintain a strong international research profile and be successful in attracting research funding, publishing scientific articles and presenting results at scientific meetings.  Evidence of an international scientific stature in the form of publication of scholarly articles in international journals and presentation of research to the international science community must be demonstrated.

 

Salary:            $48,000-65,000
