The Department
of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Minnesota invites applications
for a tenure-track faculty position in solid-earth geophysics. The appointment
will be made at the assistant professor or, under exceptional circumstances, at
a higher level with faculty rank and tenure status dependent on the
qualifications of the candidate.
Candidates are
sought with interests in one or more of the following areas: geodynamics,
geomagnetism, mineral and/or rock physics, and seismology. Outstanding
candidates in other areas of geophysics will also be considered. Potential areas of focus include the crust, mantle
and/or core of the Earth or other planetary bodies.
The appointee
will be expected to develop a vigorous research program, attract external
funding, and complement existing research activities. Teaching duties will
reflect the expertise of the candidate and include both undergraduate and
graduate courses. This position is enhanced by potential interactions with
colleagues at research centers throughout the university including the Minnesota Supercomputer Institute, the Institute for Rock Magnetism, the
geophysical fluid dynamics program at St.
Anthony Falls Laboratory, the Limnological
Research Center, the Minnesota
Geological Survey, and the Institute
of Technology Characterization Facility.
A Ph.D. degree
must be earned by the time of the appointment in August 2002. The review of
completed applications will begin January 11, 2002, and continue until an appointment is made.
