Requirements:
High school graduation, completion of a vocational training course or of a formal apprenticeship in machine shop, and some broad experience in general machine workequivalent combination of related academic or work experience.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently with a large and diverse staff (includes faculty, students, and staff). Confidence with problem solving and prioritizing duties. Familiarity with operation of machine shop. Familiarity with van servicing. Basic level Excel and Filemaker Pro (entry/retrieval).
Major Job Functions:
51% Mechanic/machinist duties:
- Confer with faculty, researchers, students and staff on specifications, planning, design, cost and other factors involved in the repair and construction of laboratory equipment.
- Construct, assemble, and/or repair various types of apparatus, instruments, or other equipment (includes but is not limited to drilling, planing, grinding, shaping, cutting, welding, painting, etc.). Materials used include but are not limited to metal, wood, steel, stainless steel, titanium, gold, plastics, etc.
- Operate and maintain adequate machine shop that includes hand tools, lathes, milling machine, drill presses, saws and other related equipment.
- Requisition shop supplies, equipment, and materials. Maintains and submits project records including time and material costs.
- Maintain stock control and tool inventory, repair/replace when necessary.
49% Departmental duties:
- Pillsbury Hall building manager and contact for Facilities Management when repairs or problems occur.
- Act as departmental liaison for building and laboratory repairs includes departmental areas in Pillsbury Hall, Ford Hall, Kolthoff Hall, Sheperd Labs, Civil Engineering, and Como Storage Facility.
- Act as departmental liaison for remodeling and upgrading of facilities working closely with Facilities Management project supervisor.
- Member of departmental Environmental Safety and Health committee. Involved in annual Safety training workshop for departmental personnel.
- Oversee Rock Shop usage; maintain supplies, repair/replace equipment, and train departmental personnel in proper use of equipment.
- Maintain and repair/replace teaching equipment (Bruntons, microscopes).
- Oversee departmental passenger van fleet schedule usage, maintain cost records, inspect and/or repair as needed, arrange for purchase and disposal of vans as needed.
