DANIEL CARMODY

I used seismic reverberations and waveform inversion to investigate mantle layering beneath South America. Specifically, I paid close attention to the Earth beneath Bolivia and the western section of the continent. Multiple discontinuities were imaged, including the global ones at 410km and 660km. Also noticed was a mid-mantle reflector located around 1000-1150km, with a geographic trend of non-observance to observance as we move from southeast to northwest. It is speculated that this is related to the subducted Farallon plate; possible support for this is provided by Grand's (1994) shear velocity structure model.
