Application Materials Checklist for Graduate Studies

Application deadline for Fall admittance is JANUARY 8 of the same year.

 

Please note that it is necessary to send applications and supporting materials to BOTH the Graduate School AND the Department of Geology and Geophysics.

Here is the list of applications and materials needed:

  • Graduate School Admissions Application
    Including application fee and supporting materials. Please refer to thier website for more detailed information.
  • Department Application
  • Statement of Purpose - this statement should include career objectives, research interests, teaching and research experience, and any publications.
    *Submission options:
    1) through ApplyYourself,
    2) through Department Application, or
    3) via email to kress004@umn.edu
    (it is not necessary to send via all three; through ApplyYourself is preferred)
  • Official copies of all transcripts.
    It is OK to send legible copies to the department (via email to kress004@umn.edu or postal mail) but the Gradaute School will need official copies. Duplication is necessary to expedite the evaluation process.
  • Official GRE scores. To department (ETS code 0504).
  • TOEFL scores for international students whose native language is not English.
    It is OK to send legible copies to the department (via email to kress004@umn.edu or postal mail) but the Gradaute School will need official reports. Duplication is necessary to expedite the evaluation process.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation
    There are two options for submission of recommendations:
    • 1) In letter format, addressed to the Director of Graduate Studies and mailed to the address listed below. These letters can be mailed directly to the department, or if you choose to send everything together, these letters must be in sealed envelopes with the referees' signatures over the seal.

    • 2) Online through the ApplyYourself system. Although the Graduate School does not use the recommendations, they have set up the option of having recommendations submitted within the ApplyYourself Application System. If you choose this option for any or all of your recommendations, you MUST information Sharon Kressler (kress004@umn.edu) so that she can retrieve the information from the application system.
