My research project involved a fluorescent dye trace in southeastern Minnesota. The study was intended to model groundwater flow in the area and to help explain the presence of a nearby large cave system, Spring Valley Caverns. We ran three traces and found that the groundwater is flowing NE between two stream systems, extending the known drainage basin of the area. This lends support to the hypothesis that Spring Valley Caverns may act as an underground conduit between the two streams. In addition to this larger project I also worked on some small projects such as water quality testing and x-ray diffraction work.
