Development ofa Digitial Simulation for the Process of Subduction
This summer, I worked with Dr. David Yuen and Dr. Taras Gerya on a project
to develop a digital simulation for the process of subduction. This project
had both scientific and technical elements. We were able to carry out several
extremely high-resolution numerical runs using one billlion tracers on
a finite difference grid. Due to the size of the simulation, we faced several
hurdles in the visualization and interpretation of our results. I designed
and implemented a web-based data interface that achieved response times
on the order of 0.25 s using hierarchical data formats. I also made it
possible to view the simulation data on a large display wall which we then
used to examine multiscale features in the subduction process.
