Minor Programs
The department of Geology and Geophysics offers two minors
- Minor in Geology
- Minor in Environmental Geoscience
Procedures for students wishing to declare a minor in either one of these programs:
Obtain the appropriate from in the department's office, 104 Pillsbury Hall. Then, the student must take the form and a copy of his/her transcript to the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies for approval. Once the program has been approved, the student then must take the signed form to his/her major advising office (e.g. IT, CLA). (If the advising office is IT, the student must also include a copy of his/her Application for Degree).

Course requirements for the Minor in Geology
(18 credits)
PREPARATORY COURSE (4 credits)
Student must take AT LEAST ONE of the following courses with a lab:
- Geo 1001 The Dynamic Earth, An Introduction to Geology
- Geo 1002 Earth History
- Geo 1011 Volcanoes of the Earth
REQUIRED COURSES (for a total of 14 credits)
These courses are determined when the student meets with the Director of Undergraduate Studies
NOTES:
- A minor in Geology shall consist of at least 14 credits of 2xxx and higher level courses.
- The Director of Undergraduate Studies must approve the particular combination of courses.
- Not more than 4 total credits in the minor program may consist of Directed Study, Directed Instruction, or Independent Study credits.
- Not more than 4 credits in the minor program may be taken on a S/N basis.
- Because of pre-requisites, students will almost certainly have to take Chem 1051.

Course requirements for the Minor in Environmental Geoscience
(18 credits)
MANDATORY COURSE (4 credits)
Students MUST complete ONE of the following courses with a lab:
- Geo 1001 The Dynamic Earth, An Introduction to Geology
- Geo 1002 Earth History
- Geo 1011 Volcanoes of the Earth
- Geo 2201 Geodynamics I, the Solid Earth (Geology and Geophysics Majors)
- Geo 3001 Earth Materials
- GC 1171 Physical Geology
- GC 1172 Historical Geology
14 CREDITS MINIMUM OF 3XXX COURSES
Students choose a minimum of 14 credits from the following:
- Geo 3001 Earth Materials
- Geo 3002 Climate Change and Human History
- Geo 3003 Geohazards
- Geo 3004 Water and Society
- Geo 3005 Earth Resources
- Geo 3006 Planets of the Solar System
SUBSTITUTIONS
With approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies, appropriate higher level Geology and Geophysics courses or courses from other departments may be substituted, such as:
- Geo 4701 Geomorphology
- Geo 4631 Earth Systems: Geosphere/Biosphere Interactions
- Geo 5701 General Hydrogeology
- Anth 3041 Ecological Anthropology
- Econ 3611 Environmental Economics
- Geog 5441 Quaternary Landscape Evolution
- Pol 3441 Politics of Environmental Protection
- Soc 4305 Society and the Environment, A Growing Conflict
NOTE:
The following restrictions apply to Geology and Geophysics Majors wishing to obtain the Environmental Sciences Minor:
- Only one 3xxx level minor course can be used to fulfill the Geology/Geophysics elective requirement for majors.
- With the exception of Geo 2201, no geology or geophysics courses used to fulfill degree requirements for the major can be used for the minor.
