Additonal Notes

Note to Macintosh/Safari users: Upon investigating lack of dynamic linking to the anonymous ftp sites below with Safari, we found that if you have a third-party FTP program on your Macintosh, Safari will direct that program to open to the root directory, but not to any of the subdirectories attached to the links. Therefore on a Mac, if you type ftp://mgssun6.mngs.umn.edu into the Safari URL window, and have an ftp program, it will open to the MGS ftp site at the root directory. You can then navigate to the subdirectories manually. NOTE: Safari on OS 10.4 does open ftp windows and subdirectories correctly.

Most of the MGS maps published since 1994 are available as GIS coverages in ArcInfo export (e00) format, or as Adobe PDF (portable document format) images.
*
Arc Export data files (map data only, no text or plates) may be in DOS and UNIX formats, or a compressed ZIP file. Directions for using the export files are found in the readme files in the directory. The Arc (e00) files can be imported into programs such as ArcView. Consult the ArcView help documents for details.

The PDF images can be transferred to any computer that is able to run Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher (Available as a free download from the Adobe web site). If the PDF files are downloaded via FTP, the format must be binary not ASCII. The map plates may be very large and only small portions can be clearly viewed on-screen at any one time. Newer versions (AR. 7x or higher may have difficulty reading some PDF files compatible with Version 4 or earlier.
