CONGRATULATIONS! to 2009 Alumnus, Ryan Swanson, for having received an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship! There were over 12,000 applications, with a success rate of 17%. Ryan, who is currently pursuing his PhD at Penn State, says "It's a great start to my career in the geosciences." Congrats, Ryan!

CONGRATULATIONS! to Bill Seyfried AND Marc Hirschmann both for having been elected as Fellows of the American Geophysical Union. "To be elected a Fellow of AGU is a special tribute for those who have made exceptional scientific contributions. Nominated Fellows must have attained acknowledged eminence in the Earth and space sciences. This designation is conferred upon not more than 0.1% of all AGU members in any given year."

Prof. David Yuen was interviewed by the Associate Press regarding the recent earthquakes and tsunami in Japan and the possibility of other nuclear power plants in Asia getting hit. Link to article here. This fall, Dr. Yuen will teach his freshman seminar on the timely topic of tsunami's (ESCI 1905).
