Field Program and Facilities

The field course will take place in two modules. The first week will be spent at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus. Introductory lectures and labs will prepare students for fieldwork. The remainder of the course will be held at the Deep Portage Conservation Reserve in northern Minnesota. Field exercises will be conducted at the heavily instrumented Interdisciplinary Research Initiative (IRI) site, located about 30 miles away. The IRI site has been operated by the U.S. Geological Survey for over two decades and includes over 100 observation wells, along with climatological stations, and stream and lake gauge stations over an eight lake watershed. After returning from the field, students will be expected to complete written reports each evening.
