Hydrocamp Home

Stream flow measurements during hydrocamp 2006.

The hydrogeology field camp is taught by 2 to 3 faculty members, a research scientist, and sometimes a TA from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, as well as by guest lecturers from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Minnesota Geologogical Survey. As a result the instructor to student ratio for a course of about 24 students is approximately 1/6 to 1/8 (i.e., 6 to 8 or less students per instructor). Where else do you have almost 24-7-access to that many hydro(geo)logy experts and teachers for 3 weeks? Your chance to ask lots of questions.

Main Instructors:

Scott Alexander
(Scientist and Hydrocamp organizer)

Scott is the main logists expert of our hydrocamp. He is making sure all instruments are working and are ready to go when students need them. He is also designing, teaching, and grading several exercises and keeps the hydrocamp on track. His research area of expertise covers a wide range and includes chemical and biological hydro(geo)logy, health and environmental issues in hydrology, and much more.

E. Calvin Alexander, Jr.
(Professor)

Calvin's area of expertise is in aqueous geochemistry, Karst hydrology, environmental chemistry, the use of tracers and isotopes in hydrology, fracture flow, and spring-shed development.

Martin Saar
(Associate Professor)

Martin's area of expertise is in geological fluid dynamics with emphasis on hydrogeology and volcanology. His research involves field, lab, and mainly numerical modeling work to investigate the physics of fluid flow in the Earth
