One of the challenges of field work in Turkey is encountering vicious sheep-herding dogs (Kangals) who like to bite cars even when the cars are moving rapidly.
Another Kangal, with characteristic collar of metal spikes. We felt compelled to share our lunch with this dog.

In May and June, Turkey has many wildflowers in bloom, including red poppies.

Our field work in June, 1998, involved examination of the Ankara melange, the suture zone at the northern margin of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex, in the ancient Hittite city of Hattusas (13th-15th century BC). We had nothing to do with the large piece of rock missing from this carved block.
Excavation of Neolithic dwellings at Catal Hoyuk, SE of Konya in central Anatolia (Building 3, Level 7, east mound). The east mound was occupied between 9500-8000 years ago.

There are some nice rocks inside the Aya Sofia in Istanbul.
