Each student or researcher with desk space in P160 has a computer on their desk which is reserved primarily for their own use. Macs in the lab run OSX and the PCs run Windows 2000 or XP, depending on their vintage and speed.
Computer users on the lab network are bound by the departmental and university acceptable use policies. Note that the university is especially vigilant in sniffing out peer-to-peer file sharing software. Do not install any software on lab computers. Don't plug your own computer into the network without asking, and most definitely do not do anything prohibited by the acceptable use policy.
A scanner is available and is attached to the Mac in the conference area of P160. Computers attached to the piston cylinders and multi-anvil are intended for data acquisition and/or automated control of these devices. They are not to be used for other purposes, since their stability and availability is critical. A general use computer is also available in the lab for email or whatever.
Don't forget to back up your data!

Upkeep of computing facilities in the lab is the responsibility of the Department
of Geology and Geophysics/ACW.
