Tony Withers: Lab: Thermocouple Corrections

Thermocouple corrections

These calibrations for type D thermocouple wire were supplied by the manufacturers. They allow correction for the deviation of a given batch of thermocouple wire from the standard. Type D wires are composed of 97%W/3%Re (+) and 75%W/25%Re (-).

Function

The EMF generated by a type D thermocouple as a function of temperature (T, in °C) is given by:

EMF = aT +bT^2 + cT^3 + dT^4 + eT^5

where the coefficients a, b, ... are given by:

T < 783 °C
T >= 783 °C
a
9.5685256e-3
9.9109462e-3
b
2.0592621e-5

c

5.3743821e-12
e

(and yes, you DO need all those significant figures!)
