The new astronomers were interested in what heavenly bodies were.
They used a diverse complement of instruments that conveyed different
types of information about the objects in space. The new astronomers
quickly found that the photographic equipment and other instruments
just becoming available gave them more information about the make-up
of the sun. For example, these astronomers found that longer exposure
times for photographs permitted the photographic "eye"
to see many more stars than those visible to the human eye.
Compare the images from the traditional and the new astronomy.
How does the visual language convey the scientific content of each
type of astronomy and what can you tell about the scientific content
of each type just from the images?
