Charles Tyson Yerkes donated the funds for the purchase of the large refracting
telescope and building of an observatoy for the University of Chicago
where George Ellery Hale was a professor. Yerkes was a street car boss in
Chicago and was known to his fellow citizens as "Yerkes the Boodler,"
a man who engaged in disreputable business practices.
