The images on this page as well as the image of the eclipse expedition on the previous page show how different the method of the new astronomers was from that of the traditional astronomers. The new astronomers worked in groups, used instruments, and used laboratory analysis in conjunction with their observations of the stars. In contrast, the traditional astronomer worked in greater isolation, and the telescope was often his or her sole instrument.
