Langley wanted to demonstrate to his readers that the lunar surface had been weathered by the same elements that affect earth. In order to illustrate his point, Langley showed this image of a wrinkled human hand (above) and likened it to the lunar landscape, thereby agruing that the moon had been weathered by the same elements that cause the human skin to wrinkle over time.
