The New Astronomy

"We should hardly be willing to bind ourselves to a program which exacted so much routine work for so long."

E. S. Holden, commenting on the possibility of astronomers at Lick observatory engaging in the Carte du Ciel project

These images, as well as those on the following page, are products of the new astronomy. Note how different they are from the conception of astronomy represented by the Carte du Ciel project, both in substance and variety. For example, the image on the right is a set of spectra taken from a star. The ability to record astral spectra gave the new astronomers the opportunity to learn the elements of which the star consisted.
