Traditional Astronomy

"The analytic machinery for the resolution of the mighty problems of nature, is comparatively perfect; and what is now required is to give the analyst exact data from the heavens, precise positions, exact quantities of mass and distance, in short, a true report of nature as she exists."

Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel, 1856

Traditional astronomers from around the world collaborated on a project called the Carte du Ciel (the map of the heavens). This map consisted of a grid (see above) on which the location of each star was indicated by a dot. The result was a collection of images that constituted a mathematical representation of the universe.
