Industry:

One can find smokestacks, refinery columns, factories, and even an oceangoing ship on the shoulders of the male form. Notice the bright rainbow in the background of this image. The artist who rendered this image wanted to express the relationship between science and technology, the concept of progress through scientific research, and perhaps the social and environmental impact of heavy industry.

Gender:
There are two human figures in this image that serve as vital connections between the science of chemistry and the chemical industry. What do each of them represent ? Remember that female chemists were a distinct minority within the scientific community when this image was produced.

Basic Science:
The collection of chemical instruments at the bottom of this image are intended to represent the basic science of chemistry. The artist who rendered this image deliberately structured the relationship of these objects to the other elements of this image in order to show a causal relationship between the basic sciences and technology. This relationship was not restricted to the discipline of chemistry and was addressed by Vannevar Bush in Science: The Endless Frontier.
