Large scale projects everywhere lent credibility to the notion of national prestige and global change:
"In spite of every hardship, men are building today on a scale never before approximated. Soviet Russia has recently completed the dam on the Dnieper River at the cost of one hundred and ten million dollars. The British have built in Egypt on the Upper Nile dams and lakes of the same giant proportions. All over Europe--in France, Germany Spain and Italy, similar undertakings have been recently completed or are in the process of accomplishment."
